How to choose an office chair
The right chair depends on how long you sit and how your body fits it. For a full workday, an ergonomic chair with adjustable lumbar support, seat height and armrests is worth the extra cost. For shorter sessions or a second desk, a budget office chair covers the basics.
Check four things before you buy:
- Seat height. Your feet should rest flat on the floor with your thighs about level. Shorter people may also want a foot rest.
- Lumbar support. It should sit in the curve of your lower back. Height-adjustable support fits more people than a fixed curve.
- Armrests. They should let your shoulders relax with your elbows near your sides. Height adjustment matters most.
- Weight limit and seat width. If you're above about 250 lb or want a wider seat, look at big and tall chairs, which are built for heavier loads.
Mesh backs stay cooler, and padded seats feel softer at first. Read the warranty too, since longer warranties usually mean sturdier parts.
