How to choose a standing desk setup
You don't need to replace your desk to stand while you work. A standing desk converter sits on top of the desk you already have and lifts your keyboard and monitor to standing height. A full electric standing desk replaces the whole desk and gives you a larger surface that moves at the push of a button.
When you compare options, look at:
- Height range. At standing height, your elbows should bend at about 90 degrees with your keyboard just below them. Taller people should check the maximum height carefully.
- Surface size. Make sure it fits your monitors as well as your keyboard. Two-tier converters keep the screen higher than the keyboard, which helps your neck.
- Lift and stability. Gas-spring converters lift without power. Electric desks move smoothly but need an outlet. Either way, check for wobble at full height.
- Weight capacity. Add up your monitors, laptop and accessories before you buy.
Most people do best switching between sitting and standing through the day rather than standing for hours. An anti-fatigue mat makes standing time more comfortable.
