Read why ›

A standing desk converter sits on top of the desk you already have and lifts your monitor and keyboard to standing height. It's a cheaper, quicker way to start standing than replacing your whole desk, and you can take it with you when you move. The catch is that converters differ a lot in how wide they are, how high they go, how much they hold and how they move.

We compared five popular standing desk converters on Amazon using the makers' specs, independent reviews and patterns in owner feedback. We looked at surface width, height range, weight limits, lift type, assembly and warranty. Here are the ones worth buying, and who each one suits.

What we like

  • Ships fully assembled, so it's ready to use out of the box
  • 36 in wide two-tier design with a lower keyboard deck and laptop cutout
  • Spring-assisted lift with 11 set heights, plus a lifetime warranty from Vari

Watch out for

  • Lifts up and toward you, so you need room behind your chair
  • Heavy, and one independent review found the keyboard deck bounces when standing

The Vari Pro Plus 36 is the converter for people who want to unbox it and start standing. It ships fully assembled, with a 36 in top shelf for a monitor or two and a lower deck for your keyboard and mouse, plus a cutout for a laptop.

A spring-assisted lift does most of the work. You squeeze two handles and it clicks into one of 11 set heights, from 4.5 to 17.5 in. Vari covers it with a lifetime warranty, and it comes in black, white and several wood finishes.

The trade-offs are bulk and the way it moves. It's heavy, and it lifts up and toward you, so you need space behind your chair. One independent review also found the keyboard deck bounces at standing height. For most people starting out, it's still the easiest converter to own. Good to know
Keyboard tray holds only 4 lb

What we like

  • Stops at any height between 4.5 and 20 in
  • Wide keyboard tray below the main 31.5 in surface
  • Arrives mostly assembled; one review had it ready in under 10 minutes

Watch out for

  • Keyboard tray is fixed and only rated for 4 lb
  • Lowering it takes some push, and it isn't meant for heavy gear

The VIVO K Series 32 in is the affordable way to try standing at your desk. You get a 31.5 in top for a monitor and laptop, and a wide keyboard tray below it.

A pneumatic spring lets it stop at any height between 4.5 and 20 in, a wider range than the Vari above. It arrives nearly built: you fit the keyboard tray and four rubber feet, which one independent reviewer finished in under 10 minutes. VIVO adds a 3-year warranty.

The keyboard tray is fixed and rated for only 4 lb, and lowering the desk takes a firm push. It's made for monitors and laptops, not a desktop tower. check the current price of the VIVO K Series 32" Converter on Amazon.

Good to know
Needs a desk at least 18 in deep

What we like

  • Electric lift moves straight up, so it doesn't push into your space
  • Rated for 44 lb and works with single or dual monitor arms
  • Deep 24.75 in surface, a keyboard tray that drops 4 in, and a 5-year warranty

Watch out for

  • Costs more than any manual converter in this guide
  • Needs a power outlet, and the keyboard tray is narrower than on the manual model

If pulling handles sounds like a chore, the Vari Pro Plus 36 Electric moves at the push of a button. It lifts straight up rather than toward you, so it doesn't crowd your space as it rises.

It's rated for 44 lb and works with single or dual monitor arms. The 24.75 in deep work surface gives screens room, the keyboard tray drops 4 in below it, and there's a 12 in laptop cutout. Setup is just attaching the tray and power cord, and Vari backs it with a 5-year warranty.

It costs more than any manual converter here, and it needs an outlet nearby. The keyboard tray is also narrower than the manual model's lower deck. check the current price of the Vari VariDesk Pro Plus 36 Electric on Amazon.

4 VIVO V Series 42" Converter (DESK-V000VL, Black)
Best for dual monitors

VIVO V Series 42" Converter (DESK-V000VL, Black)

  • Width42 in
  • Height range6 to 17 in
  • Weight limit33 lb
  • Lift typePneumatic spring, any height

Skip it if: Your desk is shallower than about 26 in or you're tall and need more lift

Good to know
Base is 36.5 x 26 in, so the desk needs room for it

What we like

  • Deep 42 x 22 in top fits two monitors side by side
  • Pneumatic springs stop at any height from 6 to 17 in
  • Separate 30 in keyboard tray and a 3-year warranty

Watch out for

  • Large 36.5 x 26 in base needs a big, deep desk
  • Tops out at 17 in, lower than the K Series' 20 in

The VIVO V Series 42 in is the pick for two monitors side by side. It's a different design from the K Series converters in this guide. You get one wide, deep 42 x 22 in top for your screens, with a separate 30 x 10.5 in keyboard tray below. The K Series 26 in top, by comparison, is only 15.7 in deep, so the V Series lets screens sit farther from your eyes.

Counterbalance pneumatic springs let it stop at any height from 6 to 17 in. The top holds up to 33 lb and the keyboard tray 4 lb. It comes in black and several wood finishes, and VIVO adds a 3-year warranty.

The trade-offs are size and range. The base measures 36.5 x 26 in, so it needs a large, deep desk. Its 17 in top height is lower than the K Series' 20 in, which may be short for taller people. check the current price of the VIVO V Series 42" Converter (DESK-V000VL, Black) on Amazon.

5 VIVO K Series 26" Converter
Best for small desks

VIVO K Series 26" Converter

The small version of our budget pick, sized for a laptop or one monitor on a narrow desk.
8.3/10Show details
  • Width25.6 in
  • Height range4.5 to 20 in
  • Weight limit33 lb
  • Lift typePneumatic spring, any height

Buy it if: You work on a laptop or one monitor at a narrow desk

Skip it if: You need room for two screens

Before you buy

Assembly
Very minimal: attach keyboard tray, hardware and videos included
Warranty
3 years (K Series)
Good to know
Keyboard tray holds only 4 lb (per K Series page)

What we like

  • Compact 25.6 in top fits small desks and dorm rooms
  • Same 4.5 to 20 in range and 33 lb rating as the larger K Series
  • Removable keyboard tray and a 3-year warranty

Watch out for

  • Only room for a laptop or a single monitor
  • Shallow 15.7 in top, so screens sit fairly close

The VIVO K Series 26 in is a smaller take on our budget pick. Its 25.6 in top suits a laptop or a single monitor on a narrow desk, a dorm desk or a kitchen table.

You still get the same 4.5 to 20 in height range and 33 lb rating as the larger K Series, plus a removable keyboard tray and a 3-year warranty.

The top is only 15.7 in deep, so a monitor will sit fairly close to your eyes, and there's no room for a second screen. If you use more than one display, step up to the 32 in version above. check the current price of the VIVO K Series 26" Converter on Amazon.

How to choose a standing desk converter

Measure your desk first. A converter needs a sturdy, flat desk that is wider and deeper than its base. Wide models need a deep desk: the VIVO V Series 42 in has a 36.5 x 26 in base, and Vari says the Pro Plus 36 needs about 25.75 in of desk depth.

Pick a width for your screens. A 26 in converter suits a laptop or one monitor. Around 32 to 36 in fits a laptop plus a monitor, or two small monitors. For two full-size monitors side by side, look at 42 in or wider.

Check the height range against your height. The converter adds its height to your desk. If you are tall, look for a top height near 20 in. If you are short, a low starting height and a keyboard tray that sits close to the desk matter more.

Add up your gear. Two monitors, a laptop and a monitor arm can get close to the limit of many converters. Most manual models are rated for 33 to 35 lb. If your setup is heavy, look for 44 lb or more.

Choose a lift type. Gas-spring models with a lever stop at any height. Spring-assisted models like the Vari lock into set positions. Electric models cost more but move at the push of a button. Some designs lift up and toward you, so leave space behind your chair.

Questions people ask

Is a standing desk converter as good as a standing desk?

For many people, yes. A converter costs less and works with the desk you already own. The trade-offs are a smaller range of heights, a lower weight limit and less room for gear than a full standing desk.

What size standing desk converter do I need?

Use about 26 in for a laptop or one monitor, 32 to 36 in for a laptop plus a monitor, and around 42 in for two full-size monitors side by side. Check that your desk is deep enough for the converter's base.

Can a standing desk converter hold two monitors?

Most 32 in and wider models can, as long as you stay under the weight limit. The Vari Pro Plus 36 Electric is rated for 44 lb, which gives more margin for two screens. The VIVO V Series 42 in has the most room for two screens side by side, but it's rated for 33 lb, so add up your monitors' weight first.

Do standing desk converters need assembly?

Some arrive ready to use. The Vari Pro Plus 36 ships fully assembled, and the electric version only needs its keyboard tray and power cord attached. The VIVO models need the keyboard tray and feet fitted.
